This was a new event for the Nicolas Barré secondary school in Kona, Nigeria. Last summer, for the first time, around twenty students received a diploma in recognition of their academic achievements. A great source of pride for all!
‘This event testifies to the school's commitment to excellence and to the diligence and seriousness of the students in their work’, said the headmistress, Sr Anthonia Emmanuel Tumba.
Distinguished guests and happy parents surrounded the new graduates, dressed in their gowns and headdresses, throughout the ceremony, which began with a mass presided over by Bishop Charles M. Hammawa. In his homily, Bishop Hammawa thanked the Infant Jesus Sisters for having chosen his diocese to implement their project for the education of the children of Kona. He also solemnly blessed the school, which has been named Arch Bishop Ignatius A. Kaigama's Hall. Kaigama's Hall’.
The headmistress, Sr Anthonia Emmanuel Tumba, also spoke movingly, urging the young people ‘to behave in an exemplary manner and to be good ambassadors for the school’. The vice-provincial, Sr Rebecca Odu, spoke in the same spirit: ‘Remember that education is a powerful tool, make good use of it’, she said to the new graduates.
Of the now former students - one has joined our sisters - planted a tree in the school grounds, the symbol of this fine beginning for this educational establishment: the little seed has metamorphosed into a young shoot.
Good luck to all the young people in this new stage of their lives!
